Civilzation of Savages

What is freedom?

“The land of the free.” Everyone knows that famous line from our national anthem. But how many of know what it is to truly be free? We all have the conception that we essentially are, but s that because that’s what were told? Is freedom really subjective, or is it in the eye of the beholder like beauty and art? We give our freedoms up continuously for security. It was Benjamin Franklin who said “He who gives up freedom for security deserves neither.” In California they have banned smoking in multi-family homes.  Some might believe it’s a good idea because it cuts down on the risk of burning down homes. But my doubts come from the regulation. How will they make sure nobody is smoking in their homes? Installing cameras in everyone’s house? Nanotechnology?  The question is when does it go too far? When does it come down to the point that we’re like ‘hey, hold on a second”? Facebook is another thing. Would you give your employer your password to check your Facebook? What kind of employer would it take for you to? Is it that we only care about the small freedoms and not so much the big ones because they carry too much responsibility? Hmm….
