Off Tasking

Here I sit in front of my computer at 1:26 am on a Sunday night, fighting with myself to get homework done . In the midst of researching Socrates is when it hits me! I call it “The Off tasking Wormhole.” For instructional purposes we’ll refer to it as the OTW. The OTW sends you researching things that have no relevance to anything you’ve got going on. You will learn SO MUCH about nothing that you actually forget to study the things that directly relate, and pertain to you.

For example, I started to type ‘Socrates’ in my Google search bar and just as Google always does it began guessing away (because Google is omnipotent) . Next thing you know I’m looking at the Solar System on Wiki. AND THEIR LINKS PROMOTE OTW! Now, for some awkward reason I’m learning about Stellar Nucleosynthisis; scroll down, the important reactions of stellar nucleosythisis? Hmm, read further…hydrogen burning, helium burning… triple-alpha process? What’s that? Click! It’s a set of nuclear fusion reactions?! Now my mind is starting to imagine all of the space action films I’ve ever seen. I switch over to YouTube. Now I’m watching Total Recall clips (the Arnold one) and look over only to see ‘Conan the Raver’. Am I interested? You bet! I scroll down click the video only to see this:

I don’t know about you, but I felt my intelligence drop a little watching that. That’s when I knew I had made it out the OWT safely. It is now 1:56, and my quest is over. I am no closer to finishing my paper any more than when I started. Beware friends, the OTW strikes when you least expect it, and should be avoided whenever possible. It is a dangerous vice for the weary. And rarely provides anything more than what Benjamin Franklin would call “trifling conversation.” But awkwardly enough the OTW helped me come up with this post.

  1. I find myself doing the exact same thing. The great part of OTW is that I become interested in things that I otherwise would not have seen. The obvious downside is that it aids the idea of technological A.D.D. and procrastination. However given both sides, I value OTW when looking for new music or writing ideas.
