Civilzation of Savages

What is freedom?

“The land of the free.” Everyone knows that famous line from our national anthem. But how many of know what it is to truly be free? We all have the conception that we essentially are, but s that because that’s what were told? Is freedom really subjective, or is it in the eye of the beholder like beauty and art? We give our freedoms up continuously for security. It was Benjamin Franklin who said “He who gives up freedom for security deserves neither.” In California they have banned smoking in multi-family homes.  Some might believe it’s a good idea because it cuts down on the risk of burning down homes. But my doubts come from the regulation. How will they make sure nobody is smoking in their homes? Installing cameras in everyone’s house? Nanotechnology?  The question is when does it go too far? When does it come down to the point that we’re like ‘hey, hold on a second”? Facebook is another thing. Would you give your employer your password to check your Facebook? What kind of employer would it take for you to? Is it that we only care about the small freedoms and not so much the big ones because they carry too much responsibility? Hmm….

#3 Real-E

I felt that the segment on Wall- E is exactly where society seems to be taking itself. How far from the truth is that of the life of the people who play wow.

Then there are the consumer sheep as I will call them. An example of them would be the part in the movie where the intercom told them that the blue was the next red. That reminds me of all of the apple commercials. And people waiting in line with the dire urgency to aquire the latest technology even though the only thing that changed was the shape… Honestly how many people know the difference between the iphone 4 and 4S? But you can bet your bottom dollar that they stayed up all night to give away $500 because its new.

Then there was the guy who fell out of his hover craft. If this happens in real life, it only means that the crossfitters didn’t make it, and died off from broken backs. The guy couldn’t get up. It reminds of the show the 10 ton woman, where they had to cut that woman out of her house. And then she lost 50 lbs just by doing arm circles…incredible.

All in all, I felt that clip was right in light with the route societies going.  Kids are being told to be home by the time the lights come on anymore because they don’t leave.  The worlds view of exercising has being replaced with a game of hungry hippos, in which where trying to gobble down value meals and big gulps because ‘it’s a recession’. Social media has ruined face to face relationships. Texting is replacing our vocal chords. Soon newborns will have to come equipped with an aux jack.

So whats your bench??

“Shut up and squat” “Strong is the new skinny” “Just do it” It seems the world has been sucked into this black hole of getting fit. I personally think that it’s a great thing. When I was about 19 I was a certified personal trainer. And to me it seemed like a great idea. I think the two most important things that we’re never taught in school are proper nutrition and fiscal responsibility.  Seeing that you can have a career where you get to wear basketball shorts and get paid a decent salary, I chose fitness. My first month at the gym they told me I was too skinny to be a trainer , and that I should gain about 20 pounds. They made me step on a scale, I was only 170 at 5’11’’!! But I digress, that’s another story. During that tenure I saw multitudes of fad diets come out. There was the Atkins, the no carb, paleo, keto, etc. It was absolutely amazing the diets people were willing to endure to look how they feel they should. In my opinion, there’s only one thing that works for both weight gain and loss. Are you eady for the formula? Energy in vs. Energy out. It’s simple as that. If your energy (calories) in is less than the energy you exert, you will lose weight, and vice versa. Another problem with fad diets is that the average consumer doesn’t follow the diet correctly. The latest diet I’ve heard of is the Intermittent Fasting diet, or IF as it is called. In this diet you fast for specific amount of hours and eat the remainder. Splits can be 16/8, 20/4 and I have heard of people fasting 5 days then pigging out for 2 days. The misconception with this is that people think that since they haven’t eaten for the specified time that a McN asty sandwich and a triple thick shake is adequate. If you’re going to starve yourself why not actually put good foods back into your body?! That’s the same thing as doing a oil change and putting the old oil back into the car. Doesn’t make much sense does it? My point exactly. I guess what I’m really trying to say is before you decide to undertake any diet, do your research. Make sure you’re not going through the motions and not getting results. You need to know if it’s something you can do for an extended period of time or if you should only do it for a week. Some diets put so much strain on your kidneys that you end up on dialysis because your body couldn’t hold water because your protein levels were too high. Aside from that remember, if you stay consistent, and persevere you’re going to make all kinds of gains…ALL KINDS!

#2 The Adverse affects of technology.

The closer we get to hover boards and virtual reality the further we get away from the natural world. Just as the YouTube video with the facts says that people are learning about jobs that don’t exist. How long is it before there is an engineering degree for people what want to learn how to regulate air? All the things in the video above represent technology. I believe the use of the word technology is: a manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge.

The duality of technology frightens me. The fact that soon a computer will out-function me is more than a little disturbing. Also I find it incredible that we have come so far as a civilization that a news paper knows more than someone in the 18th century would know in their whole lives. The fact that technology grows at such a rapid rate makes knowledge power. Its power because I feel knowledge will no longer be needed when we’re replaced with windows 250.

Off Tasking

Here I sit in front of my computer at 1:26 am on a Sunday night, fighting with myself to get homework done . In the midst of researching Socrates is when it hits me! I call it “The Off tasking Wormhole.” For instructional purposes we’ll refer to it as the OTW. The OTW sends you researching things that have no relevance to anything you’ve got going on. You will learn SO MUCH about nothing that you actually forget to study the things that directly relate, and pertain to you.

For example, I started to type ‘Socrates’ in my Google search bar and just as Google always does it began guessing away (because Google is omnipotent) . Next thing you know I’m looking at the Solar System on Wiki. AND THEIR LINKS PROMOTE OTW! Now, for some awkward reason I’m learning about Stellar Nucleosynthisis; scroll down, the important reactions of stellar nucleosythisis? Hmm, read further…hydrogen burning, helium burning… triple-alpha process? What’s that? Click! It’s a set of nuclear fusion reactions?! Now my mind is starting to imagine all of the space action films I’ve ever seen. I switch over to YouTube. Now I’m watching Total Recall clips (the Arnold one) and look over only to see ‘Conan the Raver’. Am I interested? You bet! I scroll down click the video only to see this:

I don’t know about you, but I felt my intelligence drop a little watching that. That’s when I knew I had made it out the OWT safely. It is now 1:56, and my quest is over. I am no closer to finishing my paper any more than when I started. Beware friends, the OTW strikes when you least expect it, and should be avoided whenever possible. It is a dangerous vice for the weary. And rarely provides anything more than what Benjamin Franklin would call “trifling conversation.” But awkwardly enough the OTW helped me come up with this post.

#1 A Late Introduction

To whom shall see these presents, greeting:

Since this is the first blog. As with everything it calls for a explanation of who I am. That is one of those questions like, “what is the meaning to life?” And, “Does god really exist, and if he does what does he look like?” So I’ll go with the logical answer and hopefully my past accomplishments and the things I’m interested in will give you a greater insight to “who I am”

First off, my name, legally its Christopher Evans. However, through the years its evolved into ‘Juice’. I don’t know whether to state that name as an alias or as a nickname. For the time being I’ll leave that decision to you.

As far as my background: I grew up in Phoenix, AZ, and moved to Glendale after living in Tempe for 2 years. I’ve been enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for the past 8 years and love the family I’ve gained through it.

I (like all of you) am taking this class because it is a prereqs to move onto bigger and better things in my college career. Fortunately enough for me, I actually enjoy writing. Hopefully, you will all enjoy hearing about my adventures, reviews and most of all my rants.

I have a passion for fitness and was actually a personal trainer for a couple of years. Don’t judge me but I have this obsession to train like a woman. To be more specific, to train like Dana Linn Bailey. Its just the energy and intensity that she brings to her workouts is beyond admirable and rare, even amongst men.

There will be tons more as I feel I have equipped you with enough of ‘the basics’ about me. Im excited for this experience, for like many of you, this is my first blog. Thanks for reading and as always, Stay Classy GCC.
